Welcome to Denver

Located by the west shores of Lake Norman, some 25 north of Charlotte, Denver is a quaint census-designated place (CDP) that offers peaceful, suburban living, as well as a deep connection to American history.

The area welcomed its first settlers in the late 1740s. Adam Sherrill, along with his eight sons, and John Beatty were the pioneer families that established a home along the west bank of the Catawba River. Because of its location adjacent to a swamp area, it was first known as “Dry Pond.”

By 1770, larger numbers of Scotch-Irish and German settlers began to populate the emerging Dry Pond community. In the late 1800s the town was renamed Denver – after the capital city of Colorado – in an effort to merit inclusion in then-ongoing construction of a rail service through the area. Unfortunately the railroad builders decided not to bring a rail line through Denver.

Denver was also the site of several historic Revolutionary Wars. One of them was the Battle of Cowan’s Ford, a town that is now submerged. Monuments around the area commemorate the battle.
