Said to have been named for a grove of chinaberry trees that once thrived beside the old train depot, China Grove has a population of more than 4,000 and is one of Rowan County’s larger communities. Located around 14 miles north from the heart of Concord and roughly 30 miles from Charlotte’s central business district, China Grove used to be a significant stop for travelers and was the site of one of the first rural mail routes in the nation. Today, it is filled with trendy cafés, restaurants, breweries, and galleries. Some of its historic attractions still stand, such as the China Grove Roller Mill and the Rowan Museum, which is housed in an old courthouse.

Attractions and Activities in China Grove, NC

China Grove Roller Mill

The mill was in continuous operation for over a century and served as the meeting place for China Grove’s agricultural community. Constructed in 1903, this three-story building features later additions.

Rowan Museum

Located in a 19th century courthouse, the museum’s displays and exhibits tell the story of China Grove’s and the surrounding area’s rich past. There’s an exhibit on World War I, as well as displays on the history of Rowan County.

Events

China Grove holds a variety of community events throughout the year. These include the aforementioned Farmers Day, which has been going strong for almost four decades, as well as the Southern Rowan Christmas Parade, Christmas Tree Lighting, Christmas in the Grove, Easter Egg Hunt, CruisIN the Grove, and Easter Egg Hunt.
