If you already live in Matthews, you know the town's fall calendar doesn't really sprawl. Almost everything worth walking to sits inside a triangle bounded by North Trade Street, South Trade Street, and East John Street. The farmers' market, the concert stage, the parade route, the taco patio, the brewery, and the fine-dining room where you take your in-laws are all inside a five-minute walk of one another.
That geographic accident is the reason downtown Matthews feels different from most Charlotte suburbs in September, October, and early November. You don't plan a weekend around one event. You plan it around one intersection and let the events happen on top of you.
The Saturday morning that sets the week
The anchor is the Matthews Community Farmers' Market, the Charlotte area's largest, oldest and most diverse producer-only operation. It sits at 188 N. Trade St. next to Renfrow's, and during the fall regular season it runs Saturday mornings through November before shifting to the winter season from December 2026 through March 2027, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Everything the market sells is grown, raised or made within 50 miles of Matthews, fish being the one exception.
The Saturday rhythm matters because it decides how the rest of the weekend spends itself. You show up early, park in the grassy lot off Cotton Gin Alley, walk out with pork, greens, and something the baker will only have three of, and you're already two blocks from lunch. That's the loop.
What actually plays on Trade Street this fall
The Town of Matthews runs a concert-and-food-truck series at Stumptown Park called Beats 'n Bites. The series runs March through May and September through October, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with food and dessert trucks providing menus that include seafood, Tex-Mex, burgers, sandwiches, specialty dishes and more, plus craft beer sold on site. Music begins at 6 p.m. each evening.

That's the 2026 fall schedule verbatim from the town's announcement. Two beach music dates back-to-back in October is not an accident. Beach music is Matthews' civic soundtrack in a way that residents already understand and newcomers usually don't.
Stumptown Park itself is small on purpose. The 2-acre park is used year round for concerts and special events, houses a performance stage with a dance floor, and has open grass areas and a sand volleyball court. Two acres means you can hear the band from Trade Street, which means the concert bleeds into whatever restaurant patio you happen to be sitting on.
The Labor Day interruption
Everything above is the weekly rhythm. Labor Day weekend breaks it.
Matthews Alive is the four-day festival that takes over downtown from September 4 to 7, 2026. It's been running nearly 50 years, and to date Matthews Alive has contributed more than $2.2 million into the local community. Practically, that means over 150 regional artisans and small shops, a midway with rides, games and amusements, a wide array of food vendors, one of the Southeast's largest Labor Day parades, and more than 100,000 attendees each year.
A hundred thousand people in a downtown that normally reads as a three-block grid is the kind of number that changes your Saturday. If you live within earshot, you already know the drill. If you're new, the important detail is the parade route and the road closures, both of which are posted on the festival site. Two things to file away: no pets of any kind are allowed at Matthews Alive Festival per city ordinance, though service animals are always welcome, and admission is free with carnival tickets sold on site.
Fall for Matthews, and the dogs get their day
Two more dates round out the season, both at Stumptown Park.
Fall for Matthews lands on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 10:00 AM at Stumptown Park. It's the daytime, family-scale counterpart to the evening Beats 'n Bites lineup.
Pawsitively Matthews follows a month later. It runs Saturday, November 7th, 2026, 10am-3pm, with pet-friendly vendors lining the park, along with food trucks and demo areas. The published schedule is worth a look before you go:

Where to land between things
The point of the walkable loop is that you don't drive between events. You walk from the market to lunch, from lunch to the park, from the park to a beer, from a beer to dinner, and back to your car once.
A few named landings inside that walking radius:
Portrait Gallery Restaurant & Bar. 118 E Charles Street, Matthews, NC 28105. Tuesday through Thursday 5 pm to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 5 pm to 10 pm. Small dining room, dinner only. This is the reservation you make when out-of-town relatives visit during Matthews Alive and expect you to have a plan.
Seaboard Brewing. 213 N. Trade St., a block from the farmers' market and directly on the Beats 'n Bites walking route. Seaboard, Southern Range, and Edge City breweries are returning to Matthews Summerfest in 2026, and Seaboard is the one you can also walk to on a normal Saturday.
White Duck Taco. 131 E. John St. Its address matters mostly because there is free Town parking behind the restaurant, which is arguably the best-kept parking secret during festival weekends.
Renfrow Hardware. Not a restaurant, but the market's neighbor at the North Trade Street corner. A century-old hardware store two doors from a French tasting menu is the sort of block that only survives when a town actively refuses to let it become a strip mall.
The parking truth nobody prints on the flyer
Every event page in Matthews tells you where the closures are. Almost none of them tell you where to actually park during a normal weekend when nothing is closed.
The market has its own answer: free parking is available in the grassy lot behind the market off Cotton Gin Alley as well as on Trade and West Charles Streets. During Summerfest and Matthews Alive, the town publishes additional options including the public parking lot on North Trade Street across from Matthews Station Street, on-street parking on North Trade Street, and Matthews Town Hall at 232 Matthews Station Street. During Matthews Alive weekend specifically, there is also free town parking along the train tracks and beside Seaboard Brewing at 213 N. Trade St., and more on Charles Street and West Matthews Street.
The practical version of all that: park once behind Cotton Gin Alley or along the tracks, walk everything else. If you're driving between the market, Stumptown, and dinner, you're doing downtown Matthews wrong.
The thesis, restated
Matthews' fall works because the geography is small enough to be walked and dense enough to be worth walking. The farmers' market, the concert park, Portrait Gallery, Seaboard, White Duck, and Renfrow's are all inside a three-block box that also happens to be the same box the parade closes down for Matthews Alive. That's why a Saturday morning peach purchase can turn into a Band of Oz set two weeks later without ever changing zip codes.
Most Charlotte suburbs have events. Matthews has a loop, and the loop is the reason the events feel like they belong to the same town instead of the same calendar.
